The Russian soul: myth or reality?

Do you believe that Russians posses some special mind that the world calls «Russian soul»?

At least once in your life you’ve heard the phrase «Russian soul». And by that it I mean some set of features or behaviors which are not that understandable, that we can even called them «miracle» or «mysterious». However some people have heard about it and when we started running our project we were not sure if this topic is interesting for young people.

After some time of brainstorming with my team we came up with the conclusion that it might be interesting to ask Russians what do they think about it and what it’s for us. This is what we got as a result:

I call it naivety, innocence, purity, trustfulness of our minds”

Having a Russian soul means to feel very deep «sadness» – there is a very special word in Russian not really translatable to English. But that’s kind of warm and sweet sadness, which makes feel more good than bad. We feel it when we watch movies about Second World War. When we come to a village. When we are in country side somewhere in forest or on field. This feeling when you generously want to give last thing that you have to someone who needs it more”

Our country is very big. And I feel some special kind of romance when I go somewhere far by train watching beautiful nature, old villages, drinking tea”

For me I feel that I am very proud of our history”

Forgiveness. We have it in our culture. That we cannot be angry on someone for a long time”

Ability to love and to forgive. Deep feeling of patriotism. «From extreme to extreme». Ability to give “last shirt” (Russian popular expression)”

Ingenuity. Ability to get out of different situations”

I personally don’t believe that it exits. It’s a fiction. We use it to offer an excuse about our irresponsibility and inattentiveness”

Russians never give up – another popular expression.”

Honestly when we started this topic in social media page we didn’t expect that it might spark such intense of answers and deepness of opinions. Our assumption about possible disinterest has turned to a beautiful conversation.

Do you believe this is right definitions of true Russian soul? Do you have something to comment on?
